FIFA World Cup 2026 Teams & Qualification
The expansion to 48 teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup means unprecedented representation from across the globe. The new format opens the door for nations that have never reached the final tournament before.
Automatic Qualifiers (Host Nations)
As the co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, three nations have automatically secured their spots in the tournament. These take up three of the slots allocated to the CONCACAF region:

- 🇨🇦Canada
- 🇲🇽Mexico
Slot Allocation by Confederation
FIFA has distributed the 48 available slots across the six continental confederations. The expansion heavily benefits Africa and Asia, which see their slots nearly doubled compared to the 32-team format.

The FIFA Play-off Tournament
The final two spots in the 48-team roster will be decided by a six-team intercontinental play-off tournament. This tournament will involve one team per confederation (excluding UEFA), plus one additional team from the host confederation (CONCACAF).
