FIFA World Cup 2026 Format Explained

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a historic tournament, marking the first time the competition expands from 32 to 48 participating teams. This expansion brings significant changes to how the tournament is structured, introducing more matches and a brand new knockout round.

The Group Stage: 12 Groups of 4

Initially, FIFA considered using 16 groups of 3 teams. However, to maintain the excitement of the final group stage matches and reduce the risk of collusion, the format was officially revised to feature 12 groups of 4 teams (Groups A through L).

  • Every team is guaranteed to play at least three group stage matches.
  • The total number of matches in the tournament increases to 104 (up from 64 in the 32-team format).

How Teams Advance to the Knockout Stage

With 48 teams in the group stage and a knockout bracket that starts with 32 teams, the qualification rules have changed. Here is how teams advance from the group stage:

1. Top Two Teams Advance Automatically

The teams that finish first and second in each of the 12 groups will automatically qualify for the knockout stage. This accounts for 24 teams (12 groups × 2 teams).

2. The 8 Best Third-Placed Teams Advance

To fill the remaining 8 spots in the Round of 32, the best eight teams that finish in third place across all groups will also advance. They are ranked based on points, goal difference, goals scored, and fair play points.

The New Knockout Bracket: Round of 32

Because 32 teams now advance from the group stage, an entirely new knockout round has been added: The Round of 32.

The tournament will follow a straight single-elimination knockout format from this point onward:

  1. Round of 32: 16 matches
  2. Round of 16: 8 matches
  3. Quarter-Finals: 4 matches
  4. Semi-Finals: 2 matches
  5. Third-Place Play-off & Final: 2 matches

The two teams that reach the final will still have played a total of 8 matches, up from 7 in previous tournaments.
